Chosen by Peter Van Agtmael for Vogue Italia to be one of his 6 best photo books of 2014

Although Sudden Flowers attempts to contain the impossible, through the documents and images in this wonderful book we gain a tiny glimpse into the extraordinary lives of these young kids. We can only hope the collective continues to blossom.—ADAM BELL, PhotoEye

This book illustrates work collected by American artist Eric Gottesman in collaboration with a collective of young Ethiopian orphans. Living with HIV-AIDS, these young people call themselves ‘Sudden Flowers’. The book, held together by an ordinary and fragile yellow rubber band, chronicles their art over a period of 15 years.

Eric employs photography (peel away negative Polaroids), letter writing, and re-enactments of real life traumatic experiences to allow these “Sudden Flowers” to communicate, recreate and ultimately overcome the pain they have suffered in their lives.

Each book comes with a unique envelope, containing a letter and print picturing the group, handmade and often inscribed by the members of the group.
