Mues Design

A selection of the photographs in this book were first published in 1937 by Chatto & Windus in the shape of a guide to climbing the buildings of the University of Cambridge, giving detailed technical information to fellow students with climbing ambitions.

When climbing up the facades and roofs of the Cambridge colleges at night, the students took flash lights and cameras to document their increasingly daring adventures.

Contemporary artist Thomas Mailaender acquired the negatives and prints from the family of Noël Edward Symington, who wrote the original publication. Mailaender edited and sequenced the material into a photo book, featuring full bleed images inter-leafed with facsimile sized tip-ins and wrap-around sections.
